What Is A Refrigerated Van?

A refrigerated van is any van fitted with an active cooling unit that holds cargo at a controlled temperature — anywhere from +8°C down to -22°C. “Refrigerated van” is the umbrella term: a chiller van keeps goods cool (2–8°C) without freezing, while a freezer van holds sub-zero temperatures for frozen cargo. Choosing correctly comes down to one question — does your cargo need to stay chilled, or stay frozen?

Pick The Right One

Which Refrigerated Van Do You Actually Need?

Refrigerated vans split into three working tiers by temperature. Find your cargo, and the right van — and page — is obvious.

Chiller Van · 2–8°C

Fresh produce, dairy, beverages, chilled prepared food, flowers and 2–8°C pharma. The most-booked tier in the UAE.

Freezer Van · -18 to -22°C

Frozen food, ice cream, frozen meat and seafood, and deep-frozen pharmaceutical stock that must never thaw.

Fridge Van · 2–8°C (small)

Compact chilled runs for cafés, boutique kitchens and short daily deliveries under 800kg

RULE:

One van runs in one mode per trip. If a single run carries both chilled and frozen goods, you either split the booking or move up to a dual-zone refrigerated truck — a chiller van with a few bags of ice in it is not a cold chain.

Dispatch Desk Reference

Match Your Cargo to a Temperature

This is the table we work from before confirming any booking. Describe the cargo and the route — let the operator name the van.

Cargo Holding Temp Van Type What Actually Goes Wrong
Fresh produce & vegetables 2–8°C Chiller van Loaded warm from an open yard; the van holds heat instead of removing it
Dairy, eggs, juices 2–5°C Chiller van Set to the top of the range instead of the bottom
Chilled prepared food & catering 2–5°C Chiller van Long tailgate waits at venue security
Chocolate & confectionery 12–18°C Chiller van, adjusted Booked as "chilled" and bloomed at 4°C — tell us it's chocolate
Fresh flowers 2–8°C Chiller van Humidity and door-open time damage stems before temperature does
Frozen food & ready meals -18°C or below Freezer van Booked into a chiller van because "refrigerated" sounded close enough
Ice cream & frozen dessert -22°C Freezer van Recovery speed after each door opening, not the set point, is what fails
Frozen meat & seafood -18°C or below Freezer van Partial thaw and refreeze — invisible on arrival, obvious to the customer
Pharmaceuticals & vaccines 2–8°C, logged Chiller van, pharma spec No documented log, so a compliant delivery can't be proven
RULE OF THUMB:
Any provider who takes your booking without asking what’s inside is not managing your cold chain — they’re renting you a box.

What Happens at the Kerb

Cold chain in the UAE is rarely lost while driving. It's lost standing still, with the doors open. In July, ambient temperature at street level in an industrial area like Al Quoz or Mussafah routinely sits in the mid-40s — the air just above asphalt is hotter still.

Door-open time is the real risk metric

A chilled cabin opened for three or four minutes at midday takes far longer to return to set point than most people assume — and on a ten-drop route, those recoveries stack. Fewer, faster openings beat a colder set point every time.

Loading order is route design

Loads should be stacked in reverse drop order so each stop opens the doors briefly and takes what’s nearest. We plan this with you on standing routes — it costs nothing and is the single cheapest cold-chain improvement available.

Night and early-morning windows are worth requesting

Deliveries scheduled between roughly 22:00 and 08:00 face a lower ambient load, lighter traffic, and shorter waits at receiving bays. For frozen and pharma cargo in summer, we recommend it before anyone asks about price.
Engine-driven units stop cooling when the engine is off — which matters if your driver waits 25 minutes at a mall service entrance or a free-zone gate. If your route involves long stationary waits, tell dispatch, and we’ll allocate accordingly.

Loading Discipline

Pre-Chill the Cargo, Not Just the Van

A refrigerated van is a holding device, not a cooling device. Its unit is sized to maintain a load that arrives at temperature and to compensate for heat gain through the panels and doors — not to pull a warm pallet down to 4°C while you're driving to Sharjah.

Cabin pre-cooled

Every Chill Cool van is brought to your set point before pickup, so cold cargo doesn’t sit in a warm box while the unit catches up.

Cargo must arrive at temperature

If produce has been sitting in a loading yard for an hour, the van will hold whatever temperature it’s handed. No rental fleet in the UAE can fix that in transit.

Leave an air path

Cargo stacked flat against the back wall or blocking the evaporator kills circulation. Grooved floors and pallets exist for that reason — our drivers will flag it during loading.

Rate Guide

What a Refrigerated Van Costs — and What Quietly Inflates It

We quote per job, because six variables actually move the number.
Temperature tier Freezer units run harder and cost more to operate than chiller units
Rental term Monthly and standing-route contracts price well below repeated daily hires
Van size Compact vans cost less than 1.5T vans; trucks are quoted as freight
Route & distance Within-city runs price below inter-emirate routes
Schedule Planned daytime bookings price below overnight, same-day and emergency dispatch
Waiting time The line most people don't budget for — see below
A van held 40 minutes at each of six receiving bays has lost four hours, and that time is priced somewhere by every operator, whether or not it appears on the quote you compared. Ask what’s included in the rate, and what happens when a stop runs long.
Buyer's Checklist

Seven Checks Before You Accept Any Refrigerated Van

Use this on us, and on anyone else you rent from.

01

Is the unit running?

Ask the driver to show the set point and the current cabin reading on the display.

02

Door seals intact?

Run a hand along the rubber. Compressed, cracked or lifted seals leak continuously and no set point compensates for it.

03

Grooved floor or T-bars?

A flat, unbroken floor means air can’t circulate under the load.

04

Drain clear, interior dry?

Standing water and odour mean the last load wasn’t cleaned properly.

05

Panels sound?

Dents and punctures in the internal skin mean wet insulation, which stops insulating permanently.

06

Can you get the log afterwards?

If the answer is vague, you have no evidence when a customer rejects a delivery.

07

Is there a strip curtain?

n multi-drop routes it’s the cheapest cold retention on the vehicle. Any operator that doesn’t mind you checking is an operator worth booking twice.
Evidence

Documentation, HACCP and Proving the Chain Held

For food and pharma cargo, the temperature record isn't paperwork — it's the only thing standing between you and an unwinnable dispute with a client who claims the load arrived warm.

Full-trip logging

Every Chill Cool refrigerated van logs cabin temperature for the full trip, available after delivery for HACCP files, internal QA, client claims and regulatory records.

GPS + temperature, together

GPS timestamps sit alongside the temperature log, so a delivery can be evidenced by both temperature and time.

We default to continuous for frozen and mixed loads. If a quote you’re comparing is unusually low for frozen freight, running mode is one of the places that saving is coming from.

Sectors

Who Rents Refrigerated Vans From Us

Restaurants & Catering

Chilled supply runs and frozen stock, timed around service and event schedules.

Supermarkets & Grocery

Standing warehouse-to-store routes carrying fresh and frozen together.

Ice Cream & Frozen Distribution

Deep-freeze routes where a partial thaw ends the product.

Pharma & Medical

Logged 2–8°C transport with documented handover.

Florists & Retail

Logistics & Distribution

Overflow and contract cold capacity across the UAE.
Dispatch

Coverage and Dispatch

One dispatch desk covering all seven Emirates, 24/7 including weekends and public holidays.

Ramadan and the peak summer months are when refrigerated capacity tightens across the UAE, and same-day availability narrows first for freezer vans. If you have a known seasonal spike, contract the capacity a few weeks ahead rather than calling on the day.

Process

Booking in Four Steps

01

Tell us the cargo

What it is, the route, and when. Form, phone or WhatsApp.

02

Get matched and quoted

We confirm chilled or frozen, the right size and a price, usually within the hour.

03

The van arrives ready

Cabin at temperature, GPS live, driver briefed on your stop order.

04

Delivered and logged

Cargo arrives in range, with the full-trip temperature log on request.

The one line to take from this section: freight has to arrive at temperature. A reefer unit is sized to remove heat leakage and the heat you load in — not to pull a warm pallet down in transit. Cargo loaded at +10°C is cargo delivered at roughly +10°C, with a flawless log proving the truck did exactly what it was asked to. Pull-down belongs in the cold store.

Refrigerated Van Rental FAQ

Questions About Refrigerated Vans

What’s the difference between a refrigerated van, a chiller van and a freezer van?

Refrigerated van” is the umbrella term for any van with active cooling. A chiller van holds 2–8°C for chilled goods; a freezer van holds -18 to -22°C for frozen goods. Book by the temperature your cargo needs, not by the label you searched for.

Across our fleet, +18°C down to -22°C. Any single van runs in one mode per trip — chilled or frozen — and the correct unit is matched to your cargo before dispatch.
Not in a single-zone van. Either split the run or move to a dual-zone refrigerated truck. Mixing tiers in one cabin means one of the two loads is out of range for the whole route.
Yes — every rental includes a trained cold-chain driver, plus fuel, Salik, insurance and maintenance. You’re booking a delivery capability, not a vehicle key.
Yes, daily hire is available in all seven Emirates. Monthly and standing-route contracts cost less for regular use and give you the same driver each time.
Every van logs cabin temperature for the full trip, alongside live GPS. The log is available after delivery for HACCP records, client disputes or pharma compliance.
No, and this matters more than any other answer here. Refrigeration units hold temperature; they don’t rescue a load that’s already warm. Pre-chill the cargo, and we’ll hold it there door to door.
Under two hours on average in Dubai and Sharjah, under three across the Northern Emirates, 24/7 including public holidays.
